In the eyes of the public he had taken a very conservative approach to matters in the United States especially through the fact that there was economic prosperity. Eisenhower himself declared that his presidency was the response of TR radicalism once taking the traditional role stepping back but still pulling the strings.he prederred for the federal government to decide laws
Abroad
Eisenhower was a post-wartime president (right after World War II). During his presidency, he had to deal with the Soviet Union and the threat of nuclear attack on both sides. The United States and the Soviet Union were in an arms race that could lead to disastrous results.
Presidential Hats
Commander-in Chief
Eisenhower was a former supreme commander in the army during World War II. In his first term, Eisenhower ended the conflict in Korea (Korean War). However, very little actual fighting occured durign Eisenhower's presidency, most occuring during Truman's term. However, this war resulted in hostile relations with China and Eisenhower refused to recognize the People's Republic of China.
Eisenhower took much covert action during his presidency, the extent being to investigate the nuclear capablities of the Soviet Union or the intervention at Guatemala. Eisenhower also took action in the Middle East (wher there were growing tensions) by sending the Marines to Lebanon. Eisenhower helped create South Vietnam by sending weapons and money to aid France in Indo-China.
Chief Executive
During the times for most things Eisenhower stood above the action and appointed roles. He wisely chose not to respond to senator McCarthy during the MacCarthyism phase in the united states not being manipulated by his techniques.During the time he appointed Earl warren as chief justice. During that time segragation was aboloshied from schools and due to violations by arkansas governer Orval Faubus who ordered armed gunnmen to prevent african americans from entering schools he ordered the army to move in for the safety of african americans in that area and reinforce peace but his personal opinion on the matter was that it was somthing that should have been decided by the federal government
Chief Diplomat
Eisenhower's forte was with dealing with foreign affairs. After ending the korean war Eisenhower during the geneva conferencea tempted to lessen the tension after stalins death and the cold war. He went on to refused to help french when they asked for military help from the United states against the north vietnamese forces. also the eisenhower doctrine to give military help to any middle eastern countries in order to fight off communism . During 1954-1955 Eisenhower had a mutual agreement on the defense of taiwan with china. He also provided military help to the south korean government and improve alliance relationships with Japan and supporting an Anti-communist regime in south vietnam. Together with great britian France and SEATO an alliance to resist communist movements
Ceremonial Head of State
There is very little to be said about the duty of the president as ceremonial head of state. This being only to represent a figurehead in the government. For Eisenhower, it is not of great importance and does not affect his value as a president.
Manager of the Economy
The economy was booming while Eisenhower was president. Eisenhower favored an approach called Modern Republicanism, which preserved individual freedom and the market economy yet insured that government would provide necessary assistance to workers who had lost their jobs or to senior citizens.Eisenhower signed legislation that expanded Social Security, increased the minimum wage, and created the Department of Health, Education and Welfare. He also supported government construction of low-income housing but favored more limited spending than had Truman. Eisenhower, in general, did not support large government spending on domestic projects, but in is second term (with Democrats in control of Congress) government spending in that area increased dramatically. Eisenhower emphasized balancing the budget of the government and was successful for three out of eight years in office. In general, the economy continued to boom under Eisenhower and most people were enjoying wealth than before.
Party Leader
The Republican party struggled within itself during Eisenhower's term. One of the largest problems was McCarthy. A republican himself, McCarthy continually criticized the Eisenhower administration for being too soft on Communism. when McCarthy was finally subdued, Eisenhower himself had only played a modest role.
National Leader
At home Dwight decided to be have more of a superviser role to the public while he appointed heavily trusted people to things as the secretary of state chief of justice and international affairs. As Head of state eisenhower was known for overseeing more than doing. He heavily relied on the people who he chose to appoint for positions such as his personal assistant Sherman Adams for most of the domestic roles and secretary of the Treasury,
George Humphrey.
Farewell Speech
Overall Assessment
Based upon the different presidential hats being used as benchmarks, it is fair to say that Eisenhower was a good president. He was not outstanding, but he was definitely not a poor president. As a commander-in-chief, Eisenhower did an excellent job, largely due to his experience as general during World War II. He had no military losses and very little fighting during the time while taking covert operations without many negative consequences. As Chief Executive, Eisenhower was not outstanding because he mainly appointed people to work under him to handle many affiars. This aspect of the presidency was neither good nor bad. One of Eisenhower's strengths as president was that he was an outstanding chief diplomat. He was excellent in dealing with foreign affairs, ranging from peace treaties to forming alliances. This was a job well done. Eisenhower did not play a large role as a ceremonial head of state and this aspect of the presidency is not of vital importance when speaking of Eisenhower's value as an American president. Eisenhower was a great manager though, choosing capable and trustworthy men to serve under him and handle affairs of importance. He himself was more of an overseer rather than a worker. Eisenhower provided the booming economy with additional domestic benefits such as social security advances and was also relatively adept at balancing the government budget. In this aspect he did a good job as well. Dwight was not really a Party leader in the fact that he did not take part in party politics very much. He could have been a Democrat and been elected just because he was well liked. So as a party leader, Eisenhower did not excel. As a national leader, Eisenhower appointed very trusted peoples to handle many affairs for him, but this may seem to weaken his image as a strong national leader. Overall, it is fair to say that Eisenhower did a good job with three of the aspects of presidency while only appearing weak in two of them. Thus it is accurate to assess Eisenhower and his administration good.
