In 1953, the distribution of Bibles in public schools was deemed unconstitutional by the New Jersey Supreme Court (Rose 498). President and Mrs. Eisenhower joined the National Presbyterian Church in Washington D. C. (he became the first president to join a church while in office) (Rose 498). In an American Mercury article, the clergy was charged by Dr. J. B. S. Mathews as being the “largest single group supporting Communist apparatus in U.S. today” (Rose 498). In 1955 Evangelist Billy Graham held a number of revivals in France and Great Britain (Rose 498). In 1958, a constitutional amendment mandating reading the Bible in public schools to try to stop juvenile delinquency in Michigan (Rose 498). In 1959, the New York Supreme Court held that morning prayers in public schools would be allowed but would be non-denominational and not mandatory (Rose 499). Many Protestant churches are for using birth-control as part of family planning (Rose 499). In a press conference, President Eisenhower said that a Roman Catholic could be elected president (important because John F. Kennedy, the first Roman Catholic President, would soon be elected into office) (Rose 499).

In 1957, Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., delivered his famous speech “Love Your Enemies,” reminding people that Christ said to love your enemies, advising that love is not destructive and that love can fix problems of gate and evil, this idea set the standard for how he conducted himself and how he led others in the Civil Rights Movement (Rose 515).

The book Islam: The Straight Path: Islam Interpreted by Muslims was published in 1958 (Rose 533). It was written by Mohammad Rasjidi so that Americans would better be able to understand Islam (Rose 533). During the 50s, the Muslim population in America was beginning to grow, and so it was important for accurate information to be available for interested, non-Muslim readers about the nature and history of Islam (Rose 534).
